Party Gaming Settles with Department of Justice

Until recently I headed up some marketing departments within Party Gaming plc. They were the largest internet poker company bar none. That changed when the UIGEA legislation was passed on the back of the Safe Ports Act in the USA.
Within 2 days Party took the  decision to pull out of the US marketplace which was quickly followed by other gaming and gambling busineses, but not all. Today it was announced that Party Gaming have come to an agreement with the US Attorney’s office.

A statement of facts agreed by both the USAO and PG is:

  • From 1997 until 13 October 2006, PartyGaming offered internet gaming to players located in the US, including real-money poker and casino gaming.  On 13 October, 2006, the day the UIGEA was enacted, the Group voluntarily exited the US market.
  • Prior to 13 October 2006, certain of the US customer transactions intended for PartyGaming that were processed by third parties, and other gaming and payment-related activity, were contrary to certain US laws.
  • PartyGaming has agreed to maintain, with respect to its operations, a restriction preventing internet gambling services from being provided to customers in the US in violation of the prevailing law of the US or any jurisdiction within the US.
  • If requested by PartyGaming, the USAO will bring the co-operation and remedial actions of PartyGaming to the attention of other licensing and regulatory authorities.

As well as this a fine of $105million is payable over a 2 year period.

This is way below some market expectations and most importantly allows Party Gaming to now access bank capital (if there is any left out there!) for mergers and acquisitions.

The big question is whether Party will acquire other businesses or if Party will be bought?

The secondary question is now that the 1st of agreements with the DoJ have been announced who will be next and what will happen to thepoker operators that did NOT exit the US market and are stil trading?

What do you think will happen?

Back From Amsterdam

I had an enjoyable time at the Casino Affiliate Convention and catching up with old mates was the highlight – you know who you are!

on the way back home I did learn one huge thing though. Do NOT arrive at the airport 7 hours before you flight, because despite how nice Schipol airport may be it’s still a bloody airport and therfore boring as hell!

May I recomend the Aqua Massage machine within departures. It’s €1 per minute and I went for 20 minutes in the beast and it was glorious! If ever you wondered what it felt like having high pressure water jets pounding away at you then use this and you’ll soon know!
